1973 Ducati 750 GT – Original Blue Metal Flake – 24,128 Miles – £25,995
A rare opportunity to acquire one of Ducati's most significant and collectible bevel-drive twins. Finished in its correct and striking original Blue Metal Flake paint scheme, this 1973 Ducati 750 GT is effectively the same specification and model as the machine displayed in the Ducati Museum.
Showing 24,128 miles and UK registered with V5, this is a US-specification machine featuring the higher handlebars and larger rear tail lamp unique to American-market bikes, while benefiting from a UK-spec headlamp conversion.
Imported from San Jose, California, several years ago, this is an early-production 1973 example and retains all the desirable features expected of these first-series machines, including 30mm Amal Concentrics, early-style mechanical tachometer drive, longer kickstart shaft, lower-profile rocker covers and the correct long steel intake manifolds.
The motorcycle has undergone a comprehensive ground-up restoration with careful attention paid to originality, usability and reliability. The frame and cycle parts were etch-primed and finished in durable 2K epoxy black. Wheels were professionally rebuilt with new spokes by Buchanan's and fitted with new Dunlop TT100 tyres.
The engine was fully blueprinted and rebuilt using new standard-bore cylinders and is currently receiving a fresh set of genuine Ducati piston rings sourced from Brook Henry in Australia. Electronic reliability has been enhanced with a Dynatek ignition system and new coils while retaining the original automatic advance unit. The original Smiths instruments have been professionally rebuilt, preserving the displayed mileage.
The original fibreglass fuel tank has been replaced with a steel tank, eliminating the ethanol-related issues associated with modern pump fuels, and refinished along with the bodywork in the correct light blue metal flake paint. A complete new wiring harness, fuse box, instrument console and warning lights have been installed.
Braking is handled by the correct-for-1973 Lockheed Racing caliper and master cylinder, professionally re-sleeved from 5/8" to 13mm to improve performance while maintaining the factory appearance. As the previous owner noted, "the front brake is actually very good" – a statement not often made about motorcycles of this era.
Further restoration work includes:
• Complete new exhaust system with correct Conti headers, silencers and clamps
• New chain and sprockets
• All control cables renewed
• Refurbished seat with correct cover and trim from the original supplier
• Correct red woven HT leads and Lodge-style plug caps sourced from Bevel Rubber, Australia
• Approximately 90% of fasteners replaced with stainless items, bead-blasted to replicate the original factory finish
As a previous owner aptly described it, this Ducati combines "originality, usability and reliability" in equal measure. It represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to own a landmark bevel-drive Ducati that is equally at home in a serious collection, concours display or on the open road.
With values of early bevel twins continuing to strengthen and truly correct examples becoming harder to find, this beautifully restored 750 GT offers a compelling entry into one of Ducati's most important chapters.
